Title:  Environmental Testing and Monitoring at Carbon Capture and Sequestration Sites

Description:  Proactive monitoring is required at carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) sites to address three key performance criteria: conformance with the proposed injection plan, containment of the gas within the injection zone, and identification of environmental effects, if present.  Through detailed site characterization and environmental monitoring, including a robust baseline dataset, a reliable monitoring network, and an understanding of gas migration from deep strata, the operator of CCS projects can reliably detect and attribute anomalous carbon dioxide levels to natural variation versus a leak from the storage reservoir.  This presentation will provide an overview of the environmental monitoring considerations and regulatory requirements for geologic CCS projects.

Bios:

  • Danny Kingham is a Senior Hydrogeologist at GSI Environmental Inc. and a registered Professional Geoscientist with over 17 years of professional experience.  Ms. Kingham is actively involved in environmental issues related to carbon capture and sequestration, including application of federal and state guidelines on environmental monitoring and verification programs.  She has managed large litigation projects regarding environmental impacts related to oil and gas operations, emerging contaminants, chemical and manufacturing facilities, landfills, pipelines, and air emissions throughout the US and abroad.  Ms. Kingham is an expert in environmental site investigations for residential and commercial/industrial properties, including chemical manufacturing plants and oil and gas facilities, under various state and federal regulatory programs.
  • Jonathan Skaggs has 22 years of professional experience in environmental consulting in Texas and California. He has managed complex environmental projects including environmental assessment, investigation, and remediation projects involving litigation support, compliance, environmental due diligence, regulatory and client interaction, and risk-based regulatory site closure strategies. He has extensive knowledge of Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) cleanup rules and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) program areas including the Texas Risk Reduction Program (TRRP) Rules, Leaking Petroleum Storage Tank (LPST) Program, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Industrial and Hazardous Waste (IHW) corrective action, Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) permitting, and Underground Injection Control (UIC) permitting. He has worked on sites with a wide variety of chemical contaminants, including petroleum hydrocarbons, stray natural gas impacts to groundwater, chlorinated solvents and their daughter compounds, metals.
